Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about GST Composition Scheme eligibility, registration, tax payments, quarterly statements and annual return filing.

The GST Composition Scheme is an optional simplified tax payment scheme available to eligible small taxpayers under Section 10 of the CGST Act. Eligible taxpayers pay tax at prescribed composition rates and follow a simplified compliance process instead of the regular GST return mechanism.

The general turnover limit for the goods-based Composition Scheme is ₹1.5 crore in the preceding financial year, with a lower ₹75 lakh limit applicable in specified states. A separate scheme for eligible service suppliers has a turnover limit of ₹50 lakh. The applicable threshold and eligibility conditions should be verified for the taxpayer's business and location.

Eligible small manufacturers, traders, restaurant service providers and certain other service suppliers may opt for the applicable composition category, subject to turnover limits and statutory conditions. The nature of outward supplies, registration status and other restrictions must be reviewed before opting in.

Eligible taxpayers generally use FORM GST CMP-02 to opt into the scheme when already registered, FORM GST CMP-08 for quarterly self-assessed tax payment statements and FORM GSTR-4 for the annual return. Other forms may apply for registration, withdrawal or specific circumstances.

FORM GST CMP-08 is generally required to be furnished by the 18th day of the month succeeding the relevant quarter. Taxpayers should verify the applicable GST portal due date, including any extensions or notifications for the relevant period.

FORM GSTR-4 is an annual return for composition taxpayers. For financial years from FY 2024-25 onwards, the prescribed due date is generally 30 June following the end of the relevant financial year, subject to applicable extensions or changes.

No. A taxpayer paying tax under the Composition Scheme is generally not eligible to claim input tax credit on purchases. The taxpayer also cannot collect GST separately from customers on supplies made under the scheme.

A taxpayer opting for the regular goods-based Composition Scheme is generally restricted from making inter-State outward supplies of goods. The applicable provisions and separate eligibility conditions should be checked for the taxpayer's category and business activities.

Yes. A taxpayer may withdraw from the Composition Scheme or become ineligible when prescribed conditions are no longer satisfied. The applicable withdrawal procedure, including FORM GST CMP-04 where required, must be followed. The taxpayer must then comply with regular GST provisions from the applicable effective date.

Late filing may result in applicable late fees, interest on delayed tax payment and other consequences under GST law. The amount depends on the nature of the delay, outstanding liability and applicable notifications. Taxpayers should review pending periods and complete the required filings as early as possible.
