Frequently Asked Questions

TCS Return Filing is the process of submitting a prescribed quarterly statement reporting tax collected at source on specified transactions. It includes details of the collector, collectees, transactions, tax collected and tax deposited with the government.

Form 27EQ was the prescribed quarterly statement for reporting Tax Collected at Source under the Income-tax Act, 1961 and the Income-tax Rules, 1962. It applies to relevant periods governed by the earlier framework up to 31 March 2026.

Form 143 is the quarterly statement of collection of tax at source prescribed under the Income-tax Act, 2025 and Income-tax Rules, 2026. It replaces Form 27EQ for tax years beginning on or after 1 April 2026.

Persons responsible for collecting tax at source on specified goods or transactions are generally required to furnish the applicable TCS statement. This may include eligible sellers, operators, authorised dealers and other specified collectors under the relevant provisions.

Under the earlier framework, Form 27EQ was generally due on 15 July for Q1, 15 October for Q2, 15 January for Q3 and 15 May for Q4. Under the new framework, Form 143 is generally due on 31 July, 31 October, 31 January and 31 May respectively. The applicable due date must be checked according to the relevant tax period and any notified extension.

A person responsible for collecting tax at source is generally required to obtain and quote a valid TAN, subject to specific statutory exceptions. TAN details are used for applicable TCS payment and statement filing processes.

Late filing may attract applicable fees, interest or penalties under the relevant tax provisions. Under the earlier framework, a late filing fee under Section 234E was generally ₹200 per day, subject to the amount of TCS collectible. The applicable provisions depend on the reporting period and governing law.

Yes. Eligible correction statements can be submitted to rectify errors in previously filed TCS statements, such as incorrect collectee details, challan information or collection amounts. The permitted correction process and time limit depend on the applicable tax framework.

TDS refers to tax deducted at source by a person making specified payments, whereas TCS refers to tax collected at source by a person receiving specified payments or undertaking covered transactions. Both are mechanisms for collecting tax at the source under applicable income tax provisions.

Commonly required documents include TAN and PAN details, collectee information, sales and transaction records, TCS collection workings, challan receipts, BSR code, challan serial number and previous filing details, wherever applicable. Additional information may be required depending on the nature of transactions.
