Tax Audit Eligibility & Applicability

Tax audit requirements generally apply to specified businesses and professions based on turnover, gross receipts and certain presumptive taxation conditions. Applicability should be determined for each taxpayer according to the relevant tax year and statutory provisions.

Businesses Exceeding Turnover Threshold

Businesses with total sales, turnover or gross receipts exceeding the prescribed threshold are generally required to get their accounts audited, subject to applicable conditions and exceptions.

Businesses with Higher Cash Transactions

Eligible businesses may have an enhanced turnover threshold of Rs. 10 crore where both cash receipts and cash payments do not exceed 5% of the respective aggregate amounts.

Professionals Exceeding Receipt Threshold

Professionals whose gross receipts exceed the prescribed threshold of Rs. 50 lakh in the relevant year are generally subject to tax audit requirements, subject to applicable provisions.

Persons under Presumptive Taxation

Persons opting out of specified presumptive taxation schemes or declaring profits below prescribed amounts may become liable to audit depending on the applicable statutory conditions.

Important: Tax audit thresholds are generally Rs. 1 crore for business turnover, with an enhanced Rs. 10 crore threshold where both cash receipt and cash payment conditions are satisfied, and Rs. 50 lakh for professional gross receipts. Presumptive taxation provisions may create separate audit requirements. Tax audit is distinct from statutory audit under the Companies Act or other applicable laws. Final applicability depends on the relevant tax year and individual circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about tax audit applicability, turnover limits, audit reports, required documents, filing procedures and related compliance requirements.

A tax audit is an examination of specified books of accounts and financial particulars by a practising chartered accountant under the applicable Income-tax provisions. It helps verify financial information and report prescribed particulars to the Income Tax Department.

Businesses and professionals meeting the prescribed turnover or gross receipt thresholds are generally required to get their accounts audited. Tax audit may also apply in specified cases involving presumptive taxation where the taxpayer declares income below the prescribed amounts and other statutory conditions are satisfied.

The general business turnover threshold is Rs. 1 crore. This may increase to Rs. 10 crore where cash receipts and cash payments do not exceed 5% of the respective aggregate amounts. For specified professions, the general gross receipt threshold is Rs. 50 lakh. Other statutory conditions may also trigger audit requirements.

A tax audit is conducted under the Income-tax law to report prescribed financial and tax particulars. A statutory audit is conducted under another applicable law, such as the Companies Act, 2013, to examine financial statements and meet statutory reporting requirements. One audit does not automatically replace every requirement of the other, although audited accounts may be used for applicable tax audit reporting.

For FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27), the earlier Income-tax Act, 1961 forms continue to apply: Form 3CA with Form 3CD where accounts are audited under another law, or Form 3CB with Form 3CD in other applicable cases. For Tax Year 2026-27 onwards, Form 26 is prescribed under the Income-tax Act, 2025 and Income-tax Rules, 2026.

Commonly required records include books of accounts, balance sheet, profit and loss account, bank statements, sales and purchase invoices, expense records, GST returns, TDS details, fixed asset schedules and other supporting documents. Additional information may be requested depending on the nature of the business or profession.

Yes. In specified cases, a taxpayer opting out of presumptive taxation or declaring profits below the prescribed presumptive amount may become liable to tax audit. The requirement depends on the applicable presumptive provision, income level and other statutory conditions.

Failure to obtain or furnish a required tax audit report within the prescribed time may attract penalties under the applicable law, subject to statutory exceptions and reasonable cause provisions. Under the earlier Income-tax Act, Section 271B provided for a penalty generally calculated at 0.5% of turnover or gross receipts, subject to a maximum of Rs. 1.5 lakh. The relevant year's provisions should be checked before determining any liability.

A tax audit must be conducted and the prescribed report certified by an eligible chartered accountant as defined under the applicable Income-tax provisions. Audit assistance services can support documentation and coordination, but the statutory audit opinion and certification remain the responsibility of the appointed eligible auditor.

The Income-tax Act, 2025 came into effect from 1 April 2026. Section 63 provides the tax audit requirement for Tax Year 2026-27 onwards and the broad audit thresholds remain the same. Form 26 under the Income-tax Rules, 2026 replaces the earlier separate Forms 3CA, 3CB and 3CD for the new tax year framework. Earlier financial years continue under the applicable transitional provisions.
