Frequently Asked Questions

IEC Surrender is the voluntary process through which an IEC holder requests the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to surrender an existing Importer Exporter Code. It is generally used when a business or individual no longer wishes to use the code for import-export transactions. The request is submitted online through the DGFT portal and processed by the issuing authority.

An existing IEC holder who no longer wishes to operate the allotted IEC can submit a voluntary surrender request. This may include proprietorships, partnership firms, LLPs, private limited companies and other eligible business entities through their authorised representatives.

Log in to the official DGFT portal using your registered credentials. Navigate to Services and select IEC Profile Management, or access the My IEC section from the dashboard. Choose the Surrender IEC option, provide the required information, complete the applicable digital verification and submit the request. Track the application through your DGFT account.

Commonly required details include the IEC number, registered DGFT login credentials, PAN information, business details and authorised signatory information. The DGFT surrender module may also require a valid Digital Signature Certificate containing the applicable firm or authorised signatory details. Additional documents may be requested depending on the case.

According to the DGFT IEC module guidance, an IEC surrendered through the portal is suspended for import-export transactions. The holder cannot use the surrendered IEC for normal import or export operations unless the applicable revocation process is completed and the status is restored by the authority.

No. Voluntary surrender is initiated by the IEC holder when the code is no longer required. Deactivation may occur due to non-compliance with applicable IEC updation requirements or other regulatory reasons. Suspension or cancellation may also be initiated by the competent authority under the applicable provisions. These are separate status actions and may involve different restoration procedures.

The DGFT portal provides options such as Request Revoke Suspension and Request Revoke Cancellation for eligible IEC status cases. A surrendered IEC may require the prescribed revocation request and supporting documents, followed by approval from the competent authority. Reactivation is not automatic and depends on the applicable process and approval.

Processing time depends on the completeness of the surrender request, successful digital authentication and examination by the issuing authority. Any additional document or clarification requirement may affect the processing time. Applicants should track the request through the DGFT portal for the latest status.

IEC surrender is generally a voluntary option for an IEC holder who no longer wishes to operate the code. A business closure does not by itself mean that the IEC has automatically been surrendered. The holder should review any outstanding import-export obligations, authorisations and applicable regulatory requirements before deciding to surrender the code.

IEC is linked to the PAN of the applicant entity, and the Foreign Trade Policy generally provides for one IEC against one PAN. If import-export activities are resumed, the existing surrendered IEC status should first be reviewed and the applicable revocation procedure followed where permitted. A fresh IEC application should not be treated as a substitute for restoring the existing code.
