GST Return Filing Eligibility & Applicability

GST return filing obligations depend on the taxpayer's registration category, nature of business, turnover, applicable GST provisions and selected filing scheme.

Regular GST Registered Businesses

Businesses registered under the regular GST scheme generally need to furnish applicable GST returns, including GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.

Traders, Manufacturers & Service Providers

Eligible registered persons supplying goods or services need to report their applicable outward supplies and tax liabilities through prescribed returns.

Eligible QRMP Taxpayers

Eligible taxpayers with aggregate turnover up to the prescribed QRMP limit may opt for quarterly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filing, subject to applicable conditions.

Businesses with Regular GST Transactions

Registered businesses with taxable, exempt, nil-rated or other reportable transactions must follow the return requirements applicable to their category.

QRMP is generally available to eligible regular taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover up to ₹5 crore, subject to prescribed conditions. Under this scheme, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are filed quarterly while tax payments are made monthly through the applicable process. Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GST return filing frequency, ITC reconciliation and applicable compliance requirements.

GST return filing is the process of reporting applicable business transactions, outward supplies, tax liability and eligible input tax credit to the GST department through prescribed online returns. Regular taxpayers generally file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B according to their applicable filing frequency.

GSTR-1 reports details of outward supplies, including applicable sales invoices, credit notes and debit notes. GSTR-3B is a summary return used to report applicable tax liability, eligible ITC, reversals and tax payment details. Both returns serve different purposes and must be prepared consistently.

Regular GST-registered taxpayers generally need to furnish applicable GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns. Composition taxpayers, input service distributors, non-resident taxable persons and other special categories follow different return requirements. Applicability should be checked based on the taxpayer's registration category.

For regular monthly filers, GSTR-1 is generally due on the 11th and GSTR-3B on the 20th of the following month. Under QRMP, quarterly GSTR-1 is generally due on the 13th of the month following the quarter, while GSTR-3B is generally due on the 22nd or 24th depending on the applicable state or Union Territory. Government notifications may extend specific due dates.

The Quarterly Returns with Monthly Payments (QRMP) scheme allows eligible regular taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover up to ₹5 crore, subject to prescribed conditions, to file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly while paying applicable tax dues monthly. Eligible taxpayers may also use the Invoice Furnishing Facility for specified B2B supplies during the first two months of a quarter.

Input Tax Credit is the eligible credit of GST paid on business-related inward supplies that can be used against output tax liability, subject to the conditions and restrictions under GST law. ITC should be reviewed with relevant purchase invoices, GSTR-2B and applicable eligibility requirements before claiming.

Late filing may attract applicable late fees and interest on delayed tax payment, depending on the return type, delay and statutory provisions. Non-filing can also affect compliance status and certain GST portal activities. Applicable amounts should be checked for the relevant tax period and taxpayer category.

Where a taxpayer is required to file GSTR-1 for a tax period but has no reportable outward supplies or other relevant details, a nil GSTR-1 may generally be required. The applicable return obligation should still be checked for the taxpayer's category and filing period.

Certain errors may be corrected through permitted amendment facilities or subsequent return adjustments, subject to applicable GST provisions, time limits and portal validations. GSTR-1A may also be available for specified corrections before filing the relevant GSTR-3B. The correction method depends on the nature of the error and tax period.

Taxpayers can file their GST returns themselves through the GST portal. However, professional assistance can help with invoice classification, ITC reconciliation, tax liability review, return preparation and identification of potential reporting errors. The taxpayer remains responsible for the correctness of the information furnished and applicable compliance.
