Frequently Asked Questions

A GST Cancellation Application is a formal request submitted by a registered taxpayer to cancel their existing GST registration. It is generally filed electronically in Form GST REG-16 under Rule 20 of the CGST Rules, 2017, stating the reason for cancellation and providing relevant stock, liability and supporting details.

Form GST REG-16 is used by a registered taxpayer to apply for cancellation of GST registration. After approval, the proper officer issues the cancellation order in Form GST REG-19.

Log in to the official GST portal and navigate to Services > Registration > Application for Cancellation of Registration. Enter the required details in Form GST REG-16, provide stock and liability information, upload relevant supporting documents and complete the prescribed electronic verification before submission.

Under Rule 20, the cancellation application is generally required to be submitted within 30 days of the occurrence of the event warranting cancellation. The applicable circumstances and special cases should be reviewed before filing.

The application generally requires GSTIN, legal and trade name, principal business address, correspondence details, cancellation reason, effective date, details of business transfer where relevant, stock and capital goods particulars, applicable tax liabilities and payment details.

ARN stands for Application Reference Number. It is generated after successful submission of the cancellation application and can be used to track the application status through the GST portal.

Under Rule 22(3), the proper officer is generally required to issue the cancellation order within 30 days from the application or the relevant reply to a notice, as applicable. The actual processing depends on verification, application completeness and any additional clarification requirements.

Pending GST returns and liabilities should be reviewed and addressed as required. Cancellation does not automatically remove earlier return-filing obligations or outstanding tax liabilities. The application may also be subject to departmental verification.

The applicant should review the departmental communication, identify the information or documents requested and submit an appropriate response within the prescribed time. The officer may process the application based on the response and applicable GST provisions.

No. Submission of Form GST REG-16 does not itself complete cancellation. The proper officer must issue the cancellation order. The taxpayer must also address applicable outstanding liabilities, pending returns and final return requirements, including GSTR-10 where applicable.
